Interview with Kiarra M. Taylor

Hey there Leaus and Lolitas, I’m Lola Kyle and today we have had the lovely Kiarra M. Taylor join us in the ‘Lola Land Throne Room’ to talk to us a bit about her book The Quarter Change. Let’s dive right in, shall we?

A little about this author:

Kiarra M. Taylor is a Pittsburgh native and current resident. She is a mother to a handsome son, as well as a beautiful daughter. A lifelong bookworm, Kiarra began writing in the fifth grade and hasn’t stopped since. With so many genres out there, she doesn’t limit herself to writing in just one and aims to write across genres. Her interests in books vary, as does as her interest in music; she literally likes it all.

Lola:

So, Kiarra, what genre would you consider THE QUARTER CHANGE to be? Is it contemporary romance or erotica?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

It’s a contemporary romance. I like to call it chick lit sometimes as a sub category, but according to my fans “it ain’t chick lit”, LOL!

Lola

(LOL). I mean it could be chick lit. To me, this was a journey of self discovery: A heart wrenching, panty soaking tale in my honest opinion, but it was still about finding herself as a person.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

OMG YOU GET ME!! Where have you been all my life? That’s exactly how I described my book!!

Lola:

Yes! I get you! I could honestly say that I can relate to KB, so it almost made me cry…almost! (LOL)

But I have to ask, will there be a book two for quarter change called a few cents? lol. I would love that, or is it a stand alone novel? Or a penny for your thoughts. Hell, I’m sure we’ll even take it in Roman’s point of view.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Aweee I’m so glad you could relate to her. People often think that authors write characters that are modeled after themselves which is true sometimes, but KB was a creation entirely outside myself. She would do something dumb and I would be cursing her out in my head meanwhile I’m the one who WROTE her doing it lol. I wanted her to be the kind of character people could relate to no matter what race or age she was. Interestingly the only things she and I have in common is that I was turning 25 the month I wrote this book and I traveled from my home in Pittsburgh to visit my sister in San Jose. So the book was written in the places where it’s set lol

(she then goes on to say)

It made me cry though, especially when Ro breaks down and trashes his office. He really couldn’t handle seeing her walk away from him again!

(The natives of Lola Land all go awww and touch their chest. Recalling the scene in it’s raw form.)

Lola Kyle:

(Nodding, I continue on) That part almost broke me.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

I intended for The Quarter Change to be a standalone, but people keep asking for a follow up. I’m thinking of doing one that chronicles Roman and Kimbella’s life as a married couple.

Lola:

I love the fact that your fans are able to relate to your characters. It was raw. To be honest, I didn’t even think about race when it came to them. The mention of Mr. Draper! Girl, I’m like my Mad Men fetish is in a book! I’m sure the Lolitas and Leau’s will all agree with me on that one.

(Collective sounds of YESSSSSS is chorused around the room at her mention of a sequel)

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Totally!! I also loved the family dynamic, which is modeled after my own family. I call my mom Momma and she calls me Rat LOL (as she laughs some more she continues)

OMG! It’s so crazy that you say that, because my proofreader made a stink about not mentioning Romans race so I went back and added things in!

Lola Kyle:

(lol). Family is important. The relations that you have weaved together, the little brother wanting to protect his sister, had fans thinking “Girl, this book was written for me!” lol

The deep voice, the Mad Men references, the passion, the unexpected whirlwind romance, the journey. It was perfect.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

(LOL) Donny was so frickin cute!!! My baby brother is only a year and ten days younger than me but he’s way bigger and just as protective so he inspired him!

Lola Kyle:

It was the sweetest thing ever.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Aweee you are seriously giving me life right now! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I’m trudging through final edits on “A Series of Again’s” and was wondering why I keep torturing myself by telling stories and this was exactly what I needed to hear!!!

Lola Kyle:

AWWW you’re welcome.

Weaving your life into a fictional tale must be hard or easy depending how you look at it. How do you keep from blurring the line?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Usually a little bit of a writer’s real life oozes into their story either intentionally or unintentionally! I like to take something from my life that has a lesson in it, but is also a universal lesson so that other people from all walks of life can take something from it. If I don’t think ANYONE can learn from it, that’s where I draw the line to keep it to myself!

Lola:

That’s good. It’s always good to have boundaries and I love the fact that you know what to share and what not to. I mean, at some point people just don’t care and add things to books just because it sells.

I gather from your book, your love of reading did take root from Harry Potter?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Oh yes there are definitely people who aim to only write what sells and to a small degree I do too, but mostly I write what comes to me!

YES! I was in the 5th grade and got so damn tired of waiting for the next Harry Potter book to come out so I wrote my own and that was it for me, I was hooked!!

Lola:

I get that, I feel as though I’m gonna have to create my end tale to Roman and Little Lady’s story.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

See now you’re making me want to write it! As a matter of fact I’m going to start marinating on the idea and see if a potential plot comes to me! I need a direction to go in and then I’ll be off and running, hahah!

(she jokes lightly as though talking to an old friend)

Lola:

Every time he called her that, I heard a voice in my head, from one of my fave shows. It escapes me now. But where did the pet name come from?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

I just made it up because Roman was so tall and big and Kimbella was so short and petite, LOL! But I love it too. Guys giving girls nicknames is my ultimate fave thing!

Lola Kyle:

For the sequel, now we’re not expecting all sunshines and rainbows because we know these two can be hot headed and mercurial, we expect the fights to be intense and the make ups explosive…maybe a baby or two.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Its official: you’re my KB and Ro sounding board lol!!! You’re just as obsessed with them as I am dammit and I wrote them!!

Lola Kyle:

lol. (smiling I agree) I am the President of the fan Club now. lol

So what other kinds of topics would you like to highlight? In The Quarter Change, you highlighted the concept of self-discovery?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

I want to write a YA book about loss. About someone who loses someone and slips into abusing alcohol, weed and pills. It’s so common for young people to do these things as a way to cope!

Lola Kyle:

I love that idea. It isn’t what the fans were expecting, but it’ll have to do. Right guys?

Writing about drug addiction or any kind of addiction is hard. From past experience, I can tell you it affects everyone and seeing people I love hurt was the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced.

Most people don’t write about topics like that. Well, Mary E. Twomey touches on it a bit in the Undraland series, however I digress. It’s considered taboo. So if you do bring awareness to it, I applaud you for even harboring the idea. I think we all will support that book.

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

You’re so right. Many of the real world subjects like those are considered taboo to write about, but I know some great authors, like Elizabeth Roderick, who write about characters with a mental illness and drug addiction. Those types of diverse books are greatly needed in the literary world.  Coming from a family that has a history of drug addicts, alcoholics and anything else bad in the world, I know firsthand how terrifying those kinds of situations can be! Which is why it’s my hope to always write books that have real world elements in them. Not just a hot guy and a cute girl, but real people going through real things!!

Lola Kyle:

And the award for best speech!!!! woot

So If fans were to ask Kimbella why she’s been single all this time (prior to meeting Roman, that is). What would she respond?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Lucky for you she’s here today along with Roman. Why don’t we ask her?

(shifts into talk show host mode)

Leau’s and Lolita’s and all of you tuned into Living La Vida Lola, let’s welcome Kimbella Tyler and her leading man, Roman Tanzman.

Lola:

Welcome Kimbella or KB, which do you prefer? Hello Roman, you look dashing!

KB:

Thank you for having me,you KB is fine with me Lola.

Roman:

Hello Lola.

Lola:

So fans want  to ask, KB, why were you single all that time prior to meeting Roman?

KB:

Honestly? I’ve been single because I was too shy to go for anything. I wasn’t a virgin or anything like that, but my mentality before the big “quarter change” was always to play it safe. After a bullying incident in elementary school, I just never wanted to put myself out there.

Lola Kyle:

So your sister Y’vette was right then? It was all the quarter life madness and no true need for change?

KB:

A little bit of both. I think I used my birthday as the excuse. I needed to break out of my shell. Deep down inside, I was simply tired of living a boring and meek life, tired of getting walked all over and never doing anything fun. So when my birthday rolled around, I had a flashback to the incident in grade school that forever changed me and decided FUCK THIS SHIT! It’s time to live a little!

Lola:

This is just pure gold! The fan in me is screaming, you go girl.

Lola:

So a question for Roman. There’s a saying, don’t cry over spilled milk or in this case, coffee. You have to tell us, what had you so speechless that Kimbella had to cuss you out before you even attempted to fix the spilled coffee issue?

Roman:

I was walking though the Pittsburgh airport, early as hell in the morning and half asleep, and then out of nowhere comes this green-eyed, caramel skin having goddess and I go and spill my scalding hot coffee on her! I was so shocked that I just froze for a moment before springing into action!

Lola Kyle:

So you’re telling us that you were instantly captivated by KB? Sparks? Fireworks? I guess our resident Doctor is a true romantic!

Roman:

Yes. Instantaneously. The minute I saw her it was like somebody had plunged their hand into my chest and squeezed my heart in the palm of their hand. It was a crazy feeling especially because I had been feeling down about Emily’s death as I was walking through the airport and then…BAM! That little lady walked into my life and changed everything.

Lola:

Awwww. I’m sure you just melted the hearts of fans everywhere.

KB:

He melts mine every day. (She squeezes his hand as they share a moment)

Lola:

Tell us Roman, did you expect things to end the way they did before you got your lady in the end? Why did you let her walk away the first time?

Roman:

I may lose points for saying this, but I let her walk away because I…I was scared. I had just lost my best friend, who I’d found out was living a double life and the more I got to know Kimbella it was almost like she was living a double life too. I could see that she was still figuring herself out, which frightened me because deep down I knew I was in love with that woman from the first time I kissed her. But what if she finished figuring out who she was and then left me…like Emily had? So rather than watching her leave, I pushed her out the door, slapped a bandaid on my wounded soul and tried to press forward with my life. But just as New Orleans was never the same after Hurricane Katrina blew through it, neither was my life once Kimbella Tyler entered it.

(Awww *the fans all collective swoon as the words leave his lips.* It’s official he’s won them all over.)

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

Roman really is a sweetheart!

Lola Kyle:

Let’s not forget this “Little Lady” as Roman calls her. So Kimbella, let’s take you back to the first day of your vacation, because they say hindsight is 20/20. You crash into a stranger, he scalds you and scars you for life according to the new Kimbella. Now he may have not scarred you physically, but did you expect the emotional footprints he had implanted in you forever to ever take place?

Kimbella:

*chuckles*

I can be a bit dramatic about things, in case you haven’t figured that out, and the day my fiance and I met was no different. I was doing my best to put on a brave face and be ‘New’ Kimbella, but deep down I was so nervous. I just wanted everything for my big birthday adventure to go perfectly. So when this stranger bumps into me and spills scalding hot coffee all over me and ‘New’ Kimbella’s sexy new outfit, I was ticked! So I may have hated him a little too much and too quickly, but that was my own issue and not his. But then…I just kept running into him and then I realized, wait a minute this guy is sexy as hell!

My goal going to Cali was to do the exact opposite of anything ‘Old’ Kimbella would do. That’s how I started out with Roman. Doing what the REAL Kimbella would do is how I’m staying with Roman…for the rest of my life and beyond that if I can help it!

Lola:

A thin line between love and hate they say. We’re glad that you guys are showing to definitely be on the side of love. Even though it wasn’t always like that.

Kimbella throughout your journey to self-discovery (because this is EAT PRAY LOVE in the younger years), we noticed your apprehension towards settling down and having children. Since you’re already on the way to the altar, do you have plans for kids in the future. *glancing at Roman* Or maybe even a secret love child already growing in your garden?

*Kimbella and Roman share a tense look*

Roman:

Well, we’re definitely on our way to the altar. The rest is…the rest is yet to come.

*collective groans ring out in the audience*

Lola:

Well there you have it folks, a book two is in the woodworks. You heard it here first. I can assure you that we’re all gonna be waiting.

So Kiarra tell us, were you expecting this book to be such a hit? What else can we expect from you in the future?

Author Kiarra M. Taylor:

I was not expecting the reception of The Quarter Change to be so wonderfully overwhelming. It was my debut novel so I was expecting maybe five people to read it, but the support from my hometown alone has been magnificent. My pre-orders were through the roof and the book signing event I held at my childhood library was very successful. Not to mention the online fans, many of whom have become great friends to me!  This book and all the love it’s received has kept me writing. So what you can expect in the future are more books from this newbie author! My sophomore novel titled A SERIE  OF AGAIN’S is set to come out in June the week of my birthday (yes, Kimbella and I share the same bday of 6/18 lol), so be on the lookout for that!
